Description
The Marakele National Park is 67 000 ha and is set in the heart of the Waterberg, in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. As it’s Tswana name suggests: Marakele is a “Place of Sanctuary” and boasts an outstanding array of bird and wildlife species. Its location is in a transitional zone between the dry western and moister eastern regions of South Africa.
Contrasting majestic mountain landscapes, grass clad hills and deep valleys are characteristics of the Park. Marakele National Park was originally established in 1986 and was known as the Kransberg Nature Reserve.
The biggest birding attraction is the second largest colony of Cape Vultures in the world (around 800 breeding pairs). It is also known for it’s rare Cycads which are only found in the Waterberg region and grow to about 5m tall among low shrubs at an altitude of 1 450m.
